Airport Atlanta Fire Rescue Department to Simulate and Extinguish Plane Fire

Training exercise is part of annual certification for Airport rescue firefighters

WHAT: On Tuesday, more than 20 Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) firefighters will conduct a LIVE FIRE training exercise at a burn site on Airport property. As part of an annual certification process for Airport rescue firefighters, a repurposed aircraft fuselage will be set ablaze for firefighters to extinguish. AFRD crash trucks will be used during this drill as well.

NOTES: Please advise readers/viewers that this is strictly a TRAINING EXERCISE. There will be heavy dark smoke as a result of this drill that can be seen from the interstate which may cause a high volume of phone calls from motorists and residents.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 20, 2013, 8:30 a.m.

WHERE: AFRD Training Facility NEAR 860 Lake Mirror Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30349,

(FOLLOW BELOW DIRECTIONS FOR EXACT LOCATION)

Directions:

From the North - 75-S to exit 238B ( Domestic / Montgomery ). This is a single lane road that turns into 2 lanes, get into right lane. Signs for Loop Rd. will be left lane and Clark Howell will be right lane. Very sharp curve to right, so be careful. Cross over 75 go through traffic light. You will see 2 mailboxes and sign for Flint River Plant make right turn this is Lake Mirror Rd.( you will be alongside 75 North) Look over to your left and you should be able to see a green airplane. Go through open gate and make immediate left. Entrance will be in front of you to the left. Gate should be opened around 08:00 if not call 404-787-6965 for a Training Lt. or 404-291-8062 for Training Capt.

From the South- 75-N to ext 59 ( Clark Howell Highway and Air Cargo). Stay in right lane to the traffic light make right turn. Approximately 100 yds. on right are 2 mail boxes and sign for the Flint River Plant this is Lake Mirror Rd. ( you will be alongside 75 North ). Look over to your left and you should be able to see a green airplane. Go through open gate and make immediate left. Entrance will be in front of you to the left.

From the South – 85-N to Riverdale Rd. At traffic light make left onto Riverdale Rd. Go to second traffic light and make left turn. Follow road across I-285 to traffic light. Make right hand turn onto Clark Howell Hwy. Make immediate right hand turn ( mail boxes ) onto Lake Mirror Rd. Go through open gate and make left. Entrance will be in front of you to the left.
