 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Atlanta Airport Gets Cleaner, Brighter and Lighter
By Triphenya Bailey

The terminal and concourses of the Atlanta Airport are in the midst of a transformation. A fresher and brighter airport environment is being prepared for passengers using the world’s busiest airport.

The Central Passenger Terminal Complex (CPTC) Cosmetic Upgrades Project began in March 2005. It is designed to bring brighter lights, new heating, ventilating and air conditioning, new flooring and extra restroom facilities to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport customers.

“We’re in the process of revitalizing the terminal,” said Steve Morris, project manager of the Hartsfield-Jackson Development Program’s effort to transform the Terminal as well as Concourses T, A, B, C and D.

The current terminal opened in 1980 and since its opening, millions upon millions of travelers have walked its halls, entered its gates, utilized its restrooms and trekked its corridors. “It was built over 25 years ago. It is our intention to make the cosmetic improvements that will help make it last another 25 years and then some,” said Morris.

Because of extensive passenger activity during the day, the majority of the upgrades take place late at night, when there is less passenger traffic. Carpet is being removed and replaced with new granite and quartz tile.

Restroom facilities are being “re-habbed” during the cosmetic transformation. According to Morris each set of restrooms on the concourses will have undergone renovation by the project’s completion date, which is scheduled for mid-2007. “We’re making them cleaner, brighter and lighter,” said Morris.

The next time you’re inside the Atlanta Airport take note of the cosmetic changes underway to make for a more pleasant traveling experience.
