 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Improving Navigation of Security Checkpoint
By DeAllous Smith

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will install new stanchions in the main security checkpoint area during July and August.

The project is part of the facility's "Open Day Fresh Program," an initiative designed to improve the overall appearance and cleanliness of the Airport. The permanent stanchions will accommodate more passengers and improve the traffic flow of travelers walking through the area.

The new stanchions with the Airport's name and logo printed on the belts or straps will be imbedded into the facility's floor to maximize spacing for travelers transporting their luggage.

"The current stanchions are moveable and allow individuals to alter the allocated spacing when brushing up against them with their luggage," said Operations Supervisor Frank Misner. "As a result, the lines are pushed towards the Atrium area and the stanchions can't hold as many people. Installing permanent fixtures will serve as a long-term solution."

Aviation officials are planning to refurbish existing stanchions, and all reusable equipment will be stored and used for emergencies or reassigned to the west crossover "passenger meet and greet" area and in the west curb area to assist with ground transportation operations.

The $100,000 project will also reconfigure the checkpoint entrance in Terminal North to include an emergency exit door, extend the current glass wall and add a card reader for employees. The project is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2006.

"Installation and build-out will take place during overnight hours in non-peak periods and provide minimal disruption to passenger operations," said Airport Planner Jason Terreri.

Passengers may receive up-to-the-minute wait time status on the checkpoint areas by registering for the Airport's free Track-A-Line service. Registrants may select to have the information forwarded to their cell phones, PDA or pager.
