New Intergovernmental Affairs Manager Joins Airport Team
By Bob Picariello

Walter M. Vinson, II is the airport's new Intergovernmental Affairs manager. He fills the position vacated by Myrna White, who was recently promoted to director of Public Affairs. Mr. Vinson began his new position on June 5. He previously served as a Washington, D.C. lobbyist for Fulton County Government.

Mr. Vinson worked seven years on Mississippi Congressman Bennie G. Thompson's staff. In his last four years with the congressman, Vinson served as his legislative director. When asked what he felt was the most important lesson he learned while working with Congressman Thompson, Vinson quickly replied, "The ability to interact with people, assess their particular situation and respond in an honest manner." He says he learned that skill during years of traveling with Thompson in his 275-mile long district, listening as the congressman dealt with his constituency.

Upon entering Vinson's office, a framed picture of his grandfather, Walter M. Vinson, is visible. The younger Vinson speaks of his namesake with great respect. "He was an inspiration to me," he said. "He stood for fair dealings for all people. Even though my grandfather died before I was six, the stories passed on by my family about his fair dealings with others continue to keep me focused on doing the same."

Perhaps that is one of the reasons Walter Vinson spends his spare time refereeing high school football games. Giving of himself and teamwork are part of Mr. Vinson's everyday actions, not just his bloodline. He is a highly regarded and welcome addition to the Airport Public Affairs team.
