East Meets West to Talk “Best of Best”
By Felicia J. Browder

Aviation and government officials from the world’s fastest growing economy touched down in Atlanta on Friday, October 27 to visit with their counterparts at the world’s busiest airport.

For six days, a 30-person delegation from China met with officials from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the City of Atlanta, Delta Air Lines, CIFAL-Atlanta, Unisys, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and a host of other partners and sponsors for intercultural exchange and world-class training.

While the Chinese delegates visited several notable Atlanta attractions like Zoo Atlanta, CNN, and the world renowned Georgia Aquarium, their main purpose for visiting was to participate in an “Aviation and Airport Security Preparedness” conference at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games to be held in Beijing.

During workshops, delegates learned how the Atlanta Airport prepared to host a major global event like the 1996 Olympics with such concerns as security, logistics and infrastructure improvements in play. Atlanta business, government, and Airport officials also shared with the Chinese delegation how to leverage the global visibility of the Olympics for sustained economic growth long after the Games are gone.

Mayor Shirley Franklin and Airport General Manager Ben DeCosta concluded the conference on November 1 with keynote remarks at the Sun Trust Plaza World Trade Center in downtown Atlanta.
