Hartsfield-Jackson Staff Rallies for Hands-On Atlanta Volunteer Day
By Pamela Wilson

What do you get when you combine several piles of wood beams, dozens of buckets of acrylic art paint, a few hedge clippers, and more than 40 Department of Aviation employees?

You get a lively public service project that brought some needed improvements to Beecher Hills Elementary School in Southwest Atlanta. The event took place Saturday, October 6 as part of “Hands On Atlanta Day,” an annual volunteer effort that engages teams from businesses and government organizations all over metro Atlanta.

This year the Department of Aviation, one of several City of Atlanta departments to participate, helped beautify the Beecher Hills campus by painting murals in the cafeteria, building flower planters and benches, installing shelving for school uniforms and trimming shrubbery.

Installing the wooden benches proved to be the most arduous task of the day, as the workers digging holes to anchor the benches unearthed large rocks in the process. With Assistant General Manager for Commercial Development Arnaldo Ruiz at the helm of the effort and Customer Service Manager Karen Ellis organizing the troops, the team succeeded in clearing the ground and installing the benches.

“This is a great opportunity for the Airport to interact with the community that is part of our customer base. It brings us together as a team for a worthwhile cause,” Ruiz said. “This effort reflects the service philosophy of the Airport and our General Manager.”

With the morning work successfully completed, many of the team members attended the culminating event – a concert and lunch at Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta.
