Airport Celebrates Latino Heritage Month
By DeAllous Smith

Students dressed to impress beamed with smiles at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on September 25, as aviation officials celebrated the kickoff of Latino Heritage Month with a special program for South Atlanta High School students. This year’s theme is “Embracing a Multicultural Talent Model.”

The program began with a stop at Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum where students toured the museum and met representatives from Delta Air Lines’ Latin American Network Employee Group to learn about the history of the airline. During the afternoon portion of the event 22 students visited the Airport and listened to Aviation Deputy General Manager Mario Diaz, Assistant General Manager of Commercial Development Arnaldo Ruiz and Delta Air Lines Director of International Airport Customer Service James Sarvis discuss their life’s journey and accomplishments in aviation.

“Our program provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about the various fields within aviation,” said Hartsfield-Jackson’s Special Programs Manager Tracy Gilbert. “Hartsfield-Jackson provides endless career choices for everyone. The amalgamation of talent centered at the world’s busiest airport is a key reason that we are successful at meeting the demands of our customers.”

The students of Latino and Hispanic descent represented schools involved in Hartsfield-Jackson’s “Partners in Education” program. They learned the winners of an essay writing contest sponsored by the Airport, AirTran Airways and Delta.

The program continued on Friday, October 5 with Tri-Cities High School students and on Wednesday, October 17 with students from North Clayton High School.
