Airfield surface management tool to improve efficiency, reduce delays

Hartsfield-Jackson will implement a surface management system (SMS) in 2010 that will improve airfield efficiency by providing real-time reports on airport ground operations. The SMS creates a comprehensive view of surface operations by combining flight schedule information and other data, with the exact location and identification of aircraft and vehicles on the airfield.

"This will ultimately improve the customer experience," said Airport Assistant General Manager Robert Kennedy. "This information enables key stakeholders to proactively reduce taxi times for greater fuel savings, facilitate on-time arrivals and allow for faster recovery from inclement weather operations."

Airport GM honored for public service leadership

Hartsfield-Jackson Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta received the National Forum of Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) National Leadership Award on July 16. This award honors public administrators who are dedicated to public service and who demonstrate high-quality leadership.

The award was given at the 2009 National Leadership Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. The other 2009 recipients were Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Obama; Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), House majority leader; and Mayor James M. Baker of Wilmington, Del.
