Airport, business and government officials turned out in large numbers for a ceremony to commemorate the raising of the final structural steel beam on the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal, and many media representatives were on hand to capture the event.

The “topping-out” celebration featured remarks from Mayor Kasim Reed, Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta, Valerie Jackson, Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson, Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Kenneth Stewart and Aviation Assistant General Manager Dan Molloy. They and other guests signed the beam before it was hoisted into place.

Among the media covering the April 13 event were the Atlanta Business Chronicle, MSNBC, Global Atlanta, Aviation News Today, Fox Business and several TV news channels.

After a story ran in the April Hartsfield-Jackson News, USA Today mentioned the Airport’s new common-use check-in kiosks (CUSSKs) in its Airport Check-In column. The Airport automated people mover, arguably the nation’s most popular, also proved a popular topic for media outlets, which reported on the contest to select a new, official name for it. The “Name the Train” contest was covered by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB 750 AM, among others, and was mentioned as one of the “Coolest PR Campaigns of the Week” by Coyne Public Relations. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reported the opening of the Airport’s new Buckhead Books/Café Intermezzo location.
