Cargo community thanked at barbecue lunch
By Amy Schneider

Representatives of the cargo community were the Airport’s special guests at a barbecue lunch on October 26 to thank them for their role in Hartsfield-Jackson’s award-winning cargo operation.

The lunch, catered by Sonny’s Barbecue and held outside the south cargo complex, was co-sponsored by the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Atlanta Air Cargo Association. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Aviation General Manager Louis Miller and Sam Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, gave brief remarks of appreciation.

Reed thanked the employees — including those from airlines, freight forwarders, brokers, truckers, ground handlers and ramp handlers — and commended their work, which he said contributed to large increases in cargo over the last 10 months at Hartsfield-Jackson.

Reed referred to his trip in early November to The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) International Air Cargo Forum and Exposition in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where he was scheduled to speak to cargo professionals from around the world.

“In my speech I’m going to put the world on notice that I’ve got the best people in the country, and we’re getting ready to compete in the air cargo space the same way that we do in the passenger space, where we’re the No. 1 passenger airport in the world,” he said.

Atlanta will host the 50th anniversary of the biennial TIACA forum, which is the largest conference for the air cargo industry, in 2012.

Miller noted that the Airport has received Air Cargo Week’s World Air Cargo Award for Airport of the Year for two consecutive years.

“It’s the employees like you who make the success that we have,” he said.
