Big Bird on Ice rehearses for winter
By Katena Carvajales

On the evening of November 30, Aviation General Manager Louis Miller, interim Deputy General Manager Balram Bheodari and interim Assistant General Manager for Operations, Maintenance and Security (OMS) Richard Duncan worked with the OMS team on the annual exercise, known as Big Bird on Ice, to prepare for winter operations.

“Big Bird on Ice allows us to test our equipment before the winter season begins to ensure smooth operations in the event of a storm,” said Robert Palmer, director of Maintenance. “We were able to get 10 new people trained on the equipment.”

Equipment tested included the liquid deicing trucks, snow plows, snow brooms and runway sweepers.

“It’s a collaborative effort by all the units and allows everyone to know his or her priorities and communicate effectively,” said Paul Meyer, director of Operations.
