Airport holds master plan open house
By Amy Schneider

About 40 members of the public gathered at the Airport's Tech Campus on August 14 for their first look at the Airport’s master plan process — and their first opportunity to weigh in on it.

The process to begin forming a new master plan began in January and will include several stages, one of which has a public-input component. After researching the Airport’s needs and the capabilities of its current facilities, the team drafting the master plan will determine what additional facilities are needed to accommodate future growth in passenger and cargo traffic and operations.

“This meeting was the first step in getting the public involved in the process,” said Walter Vinson, manager of government and community engagement. “They are the ones who use this Airport — our customers — and we need to know what they expect and wish for to meet their travel needs in the future.”

The meeting was set up like a walk-through, with boards of information about the stages of the process. Representatives of Ricondo & Associates Inc., a consultant that is creating the master plan; Aviation General Manager Louis Miller; and Airport representatives Vinson, Tom Nissalke, Matt Davis and Shelley Lamar answered questions and listened to feedback.

With the opening of the international terminal in May, the Airport wrapped up the major projects in its capital improvement program, which also created the fifth runway and the rental car center. The new master plan, which will be finalized late next year, will govern development at the Airport for the next 20 years.
