Hartsfield-Jackson Inbound Roadway Improvement Project to Cause Detours
Travelers are advised to pay close attention to new signage and approach the Airport with caution
ATLANTA – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is reaching a milestone in its inbound roadway improvement project, creating a temporary detour for customers approaching the Airport from the north. The detour is scheduled to go into effect on December 4, but due to a rainy forecast, it may be delayed a day or more until weather conditions are clear and the roadways can be restriped.
The detour on Airport Boulevard, effective through April 2014, will change how southbound customers access the parking lots and the terminals. Prominent signage will be on display leading up to and along the detour. Drivers are strongly encouraged to obey the 25 mph speed limit posted throughout Airport roadways.
“At Hartsfield-Jackson, we are committed to providing first-class service for our customers,” said Hartsfield-Jackson General Manager Louis Miller. “A significant part of that commitment includes a constant evaluation of safety on Airport property. As traffic to Atlanta’s Airport increases, we want to ensure that we are responding adequately; the inbound improvement project is part of that response.”
The inbound roadway improvement project is designed to provide for safer and more convenient travel to the domestic terminal. The project will upgrade the inbound roadway network between I-85 and Camp Creek Parkway on the north and Riverdale Road on the south, offering airline passengers and other airport users a safer, more convenient drive to the Airport. Once completed, the new roadways will provide a better separation of traffic entering and moving through the Airport; allow for better sight distances and more time for decision making; eliminate difficult traffic-weaving and yield situations; route exiting rental car traffic north directly to I-85 and change the airport entrance on Riverdale Road to the signalized intersection with Airport Boulevard.
The approximately $60 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014. The improvements include, but are not limited to:
• Removal of existing yield conditions at the following intersections: Terminal Return Road onto southbound Camp Creek Ramp; South Terminal Road onto South Terminal Connector; and Airport Connector Ramp onto southbound Airport Boulevard;
• Removal of short weave condition on southbound Airport Boulevard between Camp Creek Ramp and the diverges for Airport Circle (domestic north) and South Terminal Connector (domestic south);
• Removal of the short weave condition on South Terminal Parkway between the merge with South Terminal Connector and the entry plaza for South Parking;
• Additional lanes for rental car traffic exiting to northbound and southbound I-85;
• Removal of the unprotected left turn across Riverdale Road onto Terminal Parkway.
