WI-FI Overview
Wi-Fi (wireless networking standards) is available in the 6.8 million square feet of space
at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Hartsfield-Jackson’s Wi-Fi uses IEEE 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n standard short-range radio waves
to connect laptop computers, Android-platform tablets/smart phones,
any Apple Wi-Fi-enabled device and all other Wi-Fi wireless devices to the Internet.
The Airport has become a huge “hot spot,” allowing users to access wireless Internet service from
virtually any point, including the typically hard-to-reach Transportation Mall under the concourses.
In addition to creating a network that enables users to log on anywhere at any time,
the Airport offers a competitive pricing structure through a true neutral-host system.
Instead of one wireless Internet service provider (WISP) owning or managing the Wi-Fi system,
the Airport is its proprietor. When a user powers on his or her Internet-ready device, the Airport’s
Wi-Fi network (SSID ATL-WIFI) communicates with it, resulting in the display of a splash page.
The splash page provides access to information on the Atlanta Airport website and the option to connect
for a fee to the Internet through Airport-owned wireless infrastructure.
Why isn't Wi-Fi free at Hartsfield-Jackson?
Hartsfield-Jackson is “on the way to free.” Customers expect free Wi-Fi just as they expect free chairs and free use of restrooms.
However, they also expect and deserve fast uploads and downloads and 24/7 service. User access fees ensure that right now.
The Airport has dropped the price for Wi-Fi access by about 40 percent — to $4.95 — and is 100 percent committed to quickly finding
ways to remove fees as a barrier to Wi-Fi access without eliminating the great service that customers expect.
DID YOU KNOW?
In December 2011 PC World magazine ranked Hartsfield-Jackson third among the 20 best airports for tech travelers.
Hartsfield-Jackson was tied for first place with O’Hare International
Airport (Chicago) in Forbes magazine’s April 2010 listing of the nation’s most wired airports.
