"From Tradition to Innovation: Enriching Lives through Art"
Artwork from the permanent collection of Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts
Situated near the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Gatlinburg, TN., Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is a nationally recognized center for contemporary and traditional craft education. It began in 1912 as the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School with the mission to provide basic education and vocational training to the residents of Sevier County. Shortly thereafter, the founders of the school discovered the beauty of the traditional crafts from the area and made preservation of these skills part of the school's vision. First they implemented a weaving program, but as demand grew so did the art programming. In 1945, the Settlement School officially became the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Today, coursework includes beginner to advanced classes and highly personalized workshops focused on contemporary art combined with craft traditions. Instructors at Arrowmont are respected artists and teachers who come from around the world to experience the surroundings of such a rich and renowned environment.
The works on exhibit in "From Tradition to Innovation" represent the largest showing of art from the Arrowmont Permanent Collection ever presented. The Collection was formed over the decades through purchases from the school's students and teachers. The pieces demonstrate the timelessness of the handmade object as well as the originality that contemporary artists have brought to traditional craft media. The loom, the lathe and the potter's wheel are transformed into machines driven by creativity and artistic vision. The interaction provided at Arrowmont between teacher and student provides to many a life-changing event. It is hoped that this exhibition furthers Arrowmont's mission of enriching lives through art.
"From Tradition to Innovation" is located on the north side of the T Gates in the Gallery T North display cases. Be sure to check it out next time you are coming to or passing through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The exhibit is presented by the Airport Art Program in partnership with the Connell Gallery in Atlanta.
