Dignitaries ‘Walk Through Atlanta History’
By Amy Schneider

During a dedication ceremony on November 1, Airport leaders welcomed City of Atlanta officials and the artists and historians behind the educational, entertaining “A Walk Through Atlanta History” exhibit.

The exhibit is a unique, multimedia exploration of the city’s rich history and covers eight time frames: the pre-Colonial era through 1840; the first train stop in Atlanta; the Civil War and the Battle of Atlanta; Reconstruction and the rebuilding of Atlanta into a commerce hub; the rise of the Sweet Auburn district; Mayor William B. Hartsfield’s achievements; Jim Crow and the civil rights movement; and Atlanta’s entry onto the global stage.

“Hartsfield-Jackson is proud to present this visual time capsule to the world,” said Aviation General Manager Louis Miller. “It allows travelers and art enthusiasts to trace Atlanta’s history from its humble beginnings to its emergence as an international city.”

After remarks from Miller and Atlanta leaders — Duriya Farooqui, City of Atlanta chief operating officer; Valerie Jackson, wife of former Mayor Maynard H. Jackson Jr.; and City Council members H. Lamar Willis and Keisha Lance Bottoms — artist Gary Moss and Don Rooney, director of exhibitions at the Atlanta History Center, led a guided tour of the exhibit. Ross and Rooney spoke about how they decided what to include in the exhibit and highlighted some of its most interesting facts.

The exhibit, which spans from Concourse B to Concourse C, incorporates large wall murals, brief videos and reader rails that cover key periods, milestones and events in Atlanta history.
