Permanent art humanizes the vast scale of the Airport by immersing passengers in
an environment that entices the senses. It serves as a soothing counterpoint to
the often hectic travel experience. The inclusion of permanent art at the Airport
started in 1979 when former Mayor Maynard Jackson commissioned 14 pieces for the
new main terminal through the City of Atlanta's Percent for the Arts Ordinance.
Since then the Airport Art Program collection has grown steadily, and today it contains
more than 250 pieces. Works range from an impressive series of framed pieces by
Georgia's top artists to monumental architecturally integrated art that for many
define part of the Airport's character.
