Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr. International Terminal (MHJIT) - "Atlanta’s global gateway to the world"

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials are constantly reviewing and implementing enhanced features to safely and securely accommodate passengers and employees. The completion of the innovative East International Terminal project is a part of realizing that goal. Soon Atlanta will proudly unveil its new, state-of-the-art, “front door” through which the world comes to Atlanta.

The Airport has experienced increases in international passenger traffic by more than 80 percent since the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. This growth has necessitated Airport planners to expand facilities at Hartsfield-Jackson. In 2002, almost six million international travelers selected Hartsfield-Jackson as their gateway to and from the United States. By the year 2015, the annual number of international travelers through Hartsfield-Jackson is forecast to reach nearly 13 million.

The MHJIT project is a part of the Airport’s 10-year, $6 billion-plus Hartsfield-Jackson Development Program – Focus on the Future. The MHJIT will improve the way passengers navigate through the Airport. Today, arriving Atlanta international travelers must claim their luggage, process through US Customs, recheck their luggage and then reclaim it in the terminal building. Upon completion, the new international facility will create an elevated level of customer service by eliminating the baggage recheck process for Atlanta passengers. The new system will allow arriving Atlanta international passengers to exit the existing building directly into a welcome meeting area.

The new International Terminal and Concourse will provide 10 additional passenger gates that can als be utilized for domestic operations during non-peak hours. Upon completion, the project will provide upgrades to the Airport’s international passenger service and support facilities, including ticketing, baggage handling, hold rooms, concessions, duty free shops, and other traveler comforts. Additionally, new terminal access from the east side of the Airport via Interstate 75 will give passengers added convenience.
