Noise and Operations Monitoring System

The Environmental and Technical Services Division of the City of Atlanta Department of Aviation (DOA) maintains and operates a Noise and Operations Monitoring System (NOMS). The DOA’s NOMS is a state-of-the-art system consisting of:

  • Sixteen permanent noise monitors and
  • A centralized computer system.

The centralized computer system collects data from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) radar tracking system and from the DOA’s permanent noise monitors. The integration of these two sets of data allow the DOA to review data related to specific aircraft noise events and data regarding the number, types, and altitudes of aircraft flying in to and out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Notably, there are rules that govern usage of the radar data acquired with the NOMS. These rules are stipulated in a Memorandum of Agreement between the DOA and the FAA.

For more information regarding the DOA’s NOMS or to speak to a DOA representative regarding a specific noise concern, please call 770-43N-OISE (770-436-6473).
