WIFI Overview
Wireless Fidelity, more commonly known as Wi-Fi, is available in more than 5.8 million
square feet of space at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Wi-Fi uses short-range radio waves to connect laptop computers, personal digital
assistants and other wireless devices to the Internet.
The Airport has become a huge “hot spot,” allowing users to access wireless Internet
service from virtually any point inside the Airport, including the typically hard-to-reach
Transportation Mall under the concourses.
In addition to creating a network that enables users to log on anywhere, anytime
at the Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson is facilitating a competitive pricing structure
for users by establishing a truly neutral host system. Instead of one Wireless Internet
Service Provider (WISP) owning or managing the Wi-Fi system, the Airport is its
proprietor. When a user powers a laptop, if they have a wireless card (internal
or external) the Airport’s SSID will communicate with it resulting in the display
of the splash page. The splash page will allow user access to all information on
the Atlanta Airport Web site and the Web with wireless Internet access.

Why isn’t Wi-Fi free at Hartsfield-Jackson?
Hartsfield-Jackson’s Wi-Fi program is set up in such a way that the Airport provides only the infrastructure for the five Wi-Fi service providers. Because the Airport charges a fee to the providers to maintain the infrastructure, they, in turn, recoup those costs through reasonable service fees to the customer. Hartsfield-Jackson does not charge its passengers or visitors for Wi-Fi access. If there is a concern about your Wi-Fi experience at Hartsfield-Jackson, please contact the service provider, or contact the Airport’s Customer Service division at 1-877-HJA-WIFI (452-9434). To help bring added value to the customer service experience, Hartsfield-Jackson is currently researching ways to provide free Wi-Fi access for visitors.

Cellular Coverage
The Wireless System at HJAIA allows for ubiquitous cellular, PCS and Public Safety
wireless coverage throughout the entire inside area of the Airport.
The state-of-the-art, fiber-based Distributed Antenna System (DAS) forms the core
of this universal radio coverage, which is a vital line of communication for the
vast number of people who work or pass through the Airport daily. The sprawling
700-plus antennas of DAS provide wireless coverage to more than 5.8 million square
feet of Airport area covering two terminals, the Atrium, six concourses and the
underground train tunnel.
The wireless system at Hartsfield-Jackson has the following prominent features:
- Universal Cellular/PCS/Public Safety Radio Coverage:
The primary benefit
of the Neutral Host system is to improve wireless radio coverage for cellular/PCS
throughout the Airport. The Distributed Antenna System (DAS) provides:
- Universal coverage, improved call clarity and higher data throughput.
- Fewer blocked, dropped and missed calls.
- Very reliable wireless service in hard-to-reach radio coverage areas of the airport.

the need to add a series of independent systems.
